When Life Takes You into Unfamiliar Territory
A short devotional for anyone navigating uncertainty and learning to trust God.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where nothing feels familiar—where the path ahead is unclear, and your heart is filled with questions? Maybe it’s a new season of life, an unexpected change, or a challenge you didn’t ask for. You’re not alone. God’s people have been there too—and God has always been faithful in the middle of it.
In Exodus 14, the Israelites found themselves stuck between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army. It looked like God had led them into a trap. But He hadn’t. He had a plan. And in that impossible moment, Moses told the people:
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” (Exodus 14:14)

God didn’t ask them to fix the problem. He asked them to trust Him. And when they did, He parted the sea and led them to safety. The same God who brought them out of Egypt would not abandon them in the wilderness.

Later, they faced another test—not in battle, but in waiting. While Moses was meeting with God on the mountain, the people grew restless. Waiting felt too uncertain. So they rushed ahead, made a golden calf, and tried to take control. That decision led to pain and regret. Why? Because when we try to fill in the blanks of God’s plan on our own, we often end up far from where He wants us. And still, God didn’t give up on them.

In Numbers 11, the people complained again—this time about food. Manna wasn’t enough anymore. They longed for the old days, even if it meant slavery. They were tempted to think incorrectly about God and his path. But God was using the wilderness to teach them how to rely on Him—not just for food, but for trust, timing, and contentment.

Here’s what all of this reminds us:
Unfamiliar territory is not the absence of God—it’s often where He does His greatest work.
Sometimes He leads us into the unknown not to confuse us, but to free us from our need to control the outcome. To deepen our faith. To remind us that He is God and we are not.
So what should you do when you’re in unfamiliar territory?

-
Cry out to God – Just like Israel did at the Red Sea. God hears you.
-
Wait with trust – Waiting is not weakness. It’s faith in action.
-
Don’t let craving or comfort mislead you – God’s provision may not look like your preference, but it’s exactly what you need.
-
Keep your eyes on the true Leader – Not just pastors or people, but Christ Himself. He is faithful.

Jesus once explained that a man’s blindness which many assumed was some punishment for his sin, but Jesus gave the clarification of the comforting reason why we sometimes experience difficulty “so that the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:3).
That’s what your season may be about too—not punishment, but purpose.
God may not reveal every detail right now. But He will be with you. He will guide you through. And He will display His glory in your story.
So today, take a breath. Lay down your worries. And say the words of this beloved hymn in your heart: “My Lord knows the way through the wilderness. All I have to do is follow. Strength for today is mine all the way, And all that I need for tomorrow.”
A Prayer for the Journey
Prayer:
Lord, I don’t always understand the path You’ve set before me, but I trust that You do.
In this unfamiliar place, help me to rest in Your promises and not rush ahead.
Teach me to wait well. Teach me to trust deeper.
Remind me that You are near—fighting for me, providing for me, guiding me step by step.
Help me surrender the need to know all the details and instead find peace in knowing You.
You are faithful in the wilderness, and You are leading me home.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
